The first Scheepjes Bookazine I’m going to review is No. 17 Patisserie. This Bookazine edition is filled with sweet treats such as macarons, cupcakes, small cakes, and much more. Curious about what you can find in this issue? Read on!

I love sweets and I find it hard not to buy a chocolate bar, candy, or other sugary goodies. So this magazine was made for me — I’m sure of it! My sweet tooth was crying out for this kind of Bookazine, and here it is: No. 17 Patisserie. Sweet cakes, the mouthwatering macaron blanket, the candy-flower handbag, and much more.

The theme

The theme of this Bookazine is Patisserie — sweetness. Think bakery items like a croissant, cute little cakes, macarons, and other treats that fit the theme. The Bookazine is so colorful; every page is a little party. Bright pink, mint green, and yellow tones blend off the pages alongside all the delicious designs. As always, the photos are beautiful and high quality.

The items

The magazine itself is one thing, but all the items shown — that’s the real reason we buy Bookazines. This edition contains a total of 18 patterns, ranging from fashion pieces to amigurumi and home décor. Can’t crochet? No problem! There are also several knitting patterns and even a punch-needle pattern for some cute hair accessories.

I’m a big fan of the “croissant with pin” cushion. I’m planning to make it later this year as a fun decoration for our new bedroom, which I want to style in a Paris theme. The croissant will fit perfectly!

A few items you’ll find in the Bookazine — I don’t want to give everything away! — include a lovely sugar-flower handbag, a brioche jacket, amigurumi petit fours, the macaron blanket, and bonbon cushions.

Interviews with Designers

In this beautiful Bookazine Patisserie, you’ll find several interviews with designers who contributed to the magazine. The inspiring artists featured in this issue are Yokiko Mortia and Ulla-Stina Wikander. They share their stories about how they became handmade artists and where their inspiration comes from.

I always love seeing the face behind the idea. Usually you only see their hard work and the stunning items they’ve created. Seeing the people behind the ideas and creations is something that really stays with me. I admire their creativity, and they inspire me to come up with my own crochet ideas.

The yarn

The yarns used in this Bookazine include: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL, Maxi Sugar Rush, Whirl, Whirlette, Terrazzo, Mohair Rhythm, Truly Scrumptious, Scrumptious, Maxi Sweet Treat, Secret Garden, Metropolis, Downtown, Linen Soft, Organicon, Cahlista, and Softfun. All of these yarns are available online and in larger stores worldwide.

The patterns

Sometimes magazines, knitting and crochet books, and bookazines can be difficult to understand. In Scheepjes Bookazine Patisserie, it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been knitting, crocheting, punch-needling, or crafting. The books are for everyone, and the abbreviations are clearly explained on the last page.

The patterns are well written, and if you still find something tricky, you can always join their Facebook group. I’ve been crocheting for a few years myself, but sometimes I still catch myself doubting how a stitch works. Just Google it, search on YouTube, or ask in the Facebook group!

In the patterns, you’ll find a list of supplies you need to make the item, such as hook/needle size, yarn type, whether you need buttons, and more. Not every item on the list is mandatory — some are optional. Simply check what you need and whether it’s really necessary for your finished piece. That way, you can create the final item in the style you like best.

If you prefer reading patterns in your own language, stick with that. However, the Bookazines are available in multiple languages. If you prefer English over Dutch, I recommend buying the English version of the book. That way, you can start making the items you love right away instead of translating the pattern first.

My conclusion

Aside from my sweet tooth — and the fact that I’d love to grab those macarons off the pages and eat them — I think this Scheepjes Bookazine Patisserie edition is wonderful. There are several items I’d love to make myself, such as the Croissant Cushion, the Bon Bon Cushion, the Sugar Flower Handbag, the Clafoutis Shawl, and the petit fours.

Every item in the book feels special, and I’m already wondering how long it will take before a friend or my mother tries to borrow this Bookazine. For now, it’s at the top of my stack for new projects!
