It’s a fact that a huge number of people crochet. I have no idea exactly how many, but while it used to be something people joked about or associated with grandmas, today it’s a completely normal hobby without any embarrassment. To once again prove that crochet is amazing, here are 10 interesting crochet facts. Always handy if someone makes a comment—you can simply throw a fun fact right back.
Fact 1
Crochet is an old technique that has existed for centuries. It was originally used to make clothing and has since grown into a popular creative hobby. Long ago, people were already using crochet techniques to create garments and accessories to decorate their homes and themselves.
Fact 2
In many countries, crochet is still an important part of tradition and culture. In South American countries such as Mexico and Colombia, crochet is often a shared activity during holidays and special occasions. People gather together with yarn and a crochet hook and turn it into a social event. Honestly, that sounds wonderful—everyone cozy on the couch with snacks on the table, happily crocheting together.
Fact 3
There are many different crochet stitches and techniques, including single crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet. Each stitch creates a different texture and look in your work. That’s what makes crochet so fun, especially when you design your own patterns. Sometimes I plan to use only single crochet, but when I reach, for example, the skirt of a doll, I switch stitches to give the dress a more decorative look. Just changing the stitch can completely transform a project.
Fact 4
Many crochet patterns are available in books and online, and countless YouTube tutorials explain step by step how to master techniques and projects. The internet is full of free and paid crochet patterns you can use. Try the “amigurumi today” app on your phone—it’s packed with simple but fun patterns for animals, fruit, dolls, and more. And if you don’t understand the language in a video, that’s no problem at all. Just follow what the crocheter’s hands are doing. Even if they’re speaking Chinese, you can still recreate that cute bag. Simply mimic the motions—it really is that straightforward.
Fact 5
Crochet is not only a relaxing and creative hobby, it’s also beneficial for your health. It can help reduce stress and anxiety while improving coordination and concentration. When I first started crocheting, my nose was practically touching my work. I didn’t want to miss a stitch and focused intensely on doing everything right. That was almost six years ago, and now I can crochet about 50% “blind.” Simple stitches for a scarf or granny square? I can do those without even looking.
We’re halfway through these crochet facts—five more to go. Getting curious yet?
Fact 6
You can crochet with many different materials, including wool, cotton, acrylic, and silk. Each material has its own unique properties and gives a different look and texture to your project. Personally, I love crocheting with cotton. It feels soft and comfortable on my fingers. Acrylic can feel a bit stiff at first, but once you start crocheting, it glides smoothly over your hook. Wool combined with wooden crochet hooks, however, is not my favorite match—the yarn tends to drag.
Fact 7
There are countless crochet projects you can make, including blankets, cushions, scarves, bags, clothing, and toys. It’s a hobby with endless opportunities to create and experiment. I started with a simple cupcake and a small standing bunny pattern. Nowadays I crochet all kinds of things and I’m already collecting yarn for new kawaii cakes for children’s bedrooms—simply because they’re so adorable.
Fact 8
There is a growing trend of crochet groups and crafting circles that meet to socialize while working on projects. You can join Facebook groups or Instagram communities where people organize meetups. Often these take place in cozy cafés or lunch spots. You sit at a table—often with strangers—but share one big passion: crochet and/or knitting. I’ve heard it’s incredibly gezellig. Personally, I enjoy crocheting on the couch at home in the evening with a cup of coffee or tea. But if you feel like crafting together, definitely consider joining one of these meetups.
Fact 9
Crochet is not only a creative hobby—it can also become a source of income. You can sell finished items or accept custom orders. I apply this fact daily with my patterns and crochet pieces. If you’re skilled at crocheting or designing patterns, you can easily list them on platforms like Etsy. If you translate your patterns from Dutch into English, even better—you’ll reach a much wider audience and potentially earn a nice side income.
Fact 10
Many people experience crochet as a therapeutic activity that helps them relax and focus. That is absolutely true in my experience. Crocheting calms my mind—I’m focused on counting stitches, guiding the yarn, and continuing row by row. It helps me stop thinking about everything else. I often have the TV on for background noise. I don’t really watch series—I listen to them. After a few episodes, I can recognize each character’s voice while crocheting. It even feels strange when I watch the same series without crocheting and actually look at the screen.
