When my son was born, he received a small crocheted mouse in his hospital crib. It was a white and orange mouse—the colors of Maasstad Hospital. From the very beginning, he absolutely loved that little mouse, and it went everywhere with him. Even to daycare… where it suddenly got lost. They couldn’t find it anywhere.

All I had left were photos of him with the little white and orange mouse. So I decided to recreate it myself. Within one evening, I had crocheted a new mouse—and my little boy was completely happy again.

Supplies

For crocheting the birth mouse, I used Hobbii Rainbow Cotton, Cotton Kings, and Friends in 8/4. Always make sure to use baby-friendly yarn, such as cotton or softer yarns specially designed for babies. This keeps the mouse low-lint and suitable for tiny hands and gentle cuddles.

I personally used a 2.5 mm crochet hook, but you can also use a 2 mm or 3 mm hook. Make sure your stitches are tight enough so the stuffing cannot escape from the mouse.

If you’re comfortable with tighter stitching, I recommend using the yarn under technique. With this method, you wrap the yarn differently around the hook, resulting in tighter, neater stitches.

For stuffing, I used Panda Stuffing from Yarn and Colors. It’s wonderfully soft, and you don’t need much.
